Outdated building codes are another concern. A main support beam should be properly sized and supported every few feet, but in many older Lynchburg homes, beams may be undersized or support posts spaced too far apart. This over spanning places additional stress on the beam, increasing the likelihood of sagging or failure.
Similarly, homes more than 50 years old may contain inadequate materials. When framing dimensions weren’t correct, builders often used wood shims to level the structure. Over time, these wood shims compress or rot. At Acculevel, we use steel shims to prevent compression and increase load bearing surface area.
